FAQs

What is Wala?

Wala was set up to make solar how it should be: easy and affordable, for everyone. Our 100% online solar service gets you low prices on quality products from accredited solar installers.

By vetting high quality installers, manufacturers, and solar friendly energy retailers, our goal is to make every home’s solar journey a trusted one.

Who’s behind Wala?

Wala is a service of Solar Captus.

Solar Captus is a software company with the bold mission to make solar energy available to everyone and create a world where people enjoy green and affordable energy.

It all started when Jelmer and Peter met back in 2016 at a solar hackathon hosted by CSIRO in a small town just outside of Sydney. Having both experienced the solar industry’s deeply rooted issues firsthand, we were fully aware of the difficulties faced by homeowners in accessing solar and batteries.

Jelmer is from Amsterdam, co-founded a successful solar startup before and has several years of experience in the solar industry all around the world. Peter is an Australian software engineer with more than 18 years of experience in developing cutting-edge software, both in Australia and abroad.

Fast forward two years and we’ve built a passionate team of engineers, developers and designers bound by one, clear vision — to make solar how it should be: easy and affordable, for everyone.

What technology do you use?

We use sophisticated software that combines location-specific and historical weather data to automatically calculate your roof’s solar potential in seconds. We combine artificial intelligence and 3D simulation software to determine the optimal number of solar panels for your roof. By combining this information with your energy needs, we can tailor a solar system for your home within minutes.

Do I have to pay to use the service?

To help operate the Wala platform and to offer services like the engineering review, we only charge a service fee when a solar installation is completed.

We charge an average service fee of 6%. Our sophisticated software and streamlined online process removes the need for expensive sales people who take a 15% to 25% sales commission.

Where is Wala currently available?

Wala has initially launched in select suburbs in Melbourne, but we’re working to make our service available to everyone in Melbourne. We expect to launch in other states soon.

How long does it take to get a quote?

It only takes 2 minutes to see a tailored quote online. Before you accept the quote, an engineer will carefully review your system within 24 hours.

How do I know whether a system is right for me?

We use advanced software to tailor a system to your needs and preferences and recommend the best option for you. An engineer will always double-check whether the system is right for you. Our live chat support is here to answer your questions.

Why should I consider solar?

More power to you. Having solar panels on your roof means you can generate free energy during the day. It’s the fastest way to take control of your energy needs and use it to power your home!

Bigger bang for your buck. By installing solar, you can save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising prices, plus you will also get paid for any surplus power you generate if you decide to switch to a solar friendly energy retailer.

A win for you and a win for the plant. Installing solar is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and doing your bit to increase renewables on the grid. Together, we can make energy greener and affordable for everyone.

What is a solar system?

A solar system consists of solar panels, an inverter and a grid-connect solar meter. When the sun shines, solar panels on the roof absorb sunlight and convert it to direct current (DC) electricity. DC isn’t suited to work with appliances we use at home, so an inverter is used to convert it to alternating current (AC) electricity. Once the inverter has done its job, wiring and a grid-connect solar meter ensure you’re importing and exporting electricity into the grid and your house.

How long does a solar system last?

Solar panels last for 25 to 30 years on average, whereas the average lifespan of an inverter is 10 to 15 years.

Do I qualify for a subsidy?

Yes. All residential solar systems qualify for the Solar Credits program as part of a federal government scheme called the Renewable Energy Target. This program offers a subsidy in the form of a financial rebate, which is commonly referred to as the Small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

The size of your solar system and your location determine the number of STCs you are eligible for. The actual rebate depends on STC price, which is applied as an up-front discount on the purchase of a residential solar system. The STC price is based on market condition and averages around $37 per STC.

The subsidy typically reduces the cost of a solar system by 20% and is applied at the point of sale. The solar installer applies for the STCs so you don’t have to worry about processing any paperwork yourself.

What should I know about batteries?

Batteries help you maximise the value of your solar system. With a battery, you can store any excess solar energy generated during the day for overnight use. When choosing the size of your battery, it’s essential to keep in mind your personal energy needs and usage patterns. Every household has its own way of using energy throughout the day. Some use most of their power during the day, others during the night. Our sophisticated software is designed to help you find the right system for your home.

What is a Clean Energy Council approved installer?

Being approved by the Clean Energy Council is a way for solar businesses to show their commitment to responsible sales and marketing activities and solar industry best practice. Accreditation with the Clean Energy Council gives installers access to continuous professional development and technical support to ensure solar PV installations of a superior quality.
