What is Wala?

We’re wala – your personal and online guide in helping you find the right solar system for your home.

The Wala platform is a 100% online solar service that is powered by state of the art software and live chat support. Within minutes, you receive a personal system recommendation online that is tailored to your home's needs and preferences.

We saw a problem in today’s industry. Buying solar is ridiculously complicated, opaque, and a painful process to go through. It doesn’t have to be like this. The industry can change - and we started Wala to lead this change.

Wala makes your solar experience beautifully simple. And there are three ways we’re doing this – we make it easy, tailored to you and more affordable.

Who’s behind Wala?

Wala is a service of Solar Captus.

Solar Captus is a software company with the bold mission to make solar energy available to everyone and create a world where people enjoy green and affordable energy.

More than 2 years ago, Jelmer and Peter co-founded Solar Captus at a CSIRO solar hackathon just outside of Sydney. This is where we met for the first time and decided to combine our strengths and build software that makes buying solar easy and more affordable.

Jelmer is from Amsterdam, co-founded a successful startup before and has experience in the solar industry all around the world. Peter is an Australian software engineer with more than 18 years of experience in developing cutting-edge software, both in Australia and abroad.

Today, we’ve got a team of developers, engineers and designers from all over the world. We design, build and implement state of the art software to make our mission a reality.

Wala is one of the first services launched by Solar Captus that will make the industry a whole lot better.

What technology do you use?

At the core of our platform, we use sophisticated software that combines location-specific and historical weather data to automatically calculate your roof’s solar potential in seconds. We combine artificial intelligence and 3D simulation software, to determine the optimal number of solar panels for your roof.

Do I have to pay to use the service?

No. The use of our service is free.

To help operate the Wala platform, we get paid a service fee by the solar installers in our platform. We charge solar installers a service fee every time an installation is completed.

Where is Wala currently available?

Wala has initially launched in select suburbs in Melbourne. We expect to launch Wala in other states in Australia soon. Join our mailing list to keep up to date on when we’re launching near you.

How long does it take to get a quote?

All quotes go through a stringent engineering review, so expect to receive a firm quote within 2 business days after you’ve completed the quote request.

How do I know whether a system is right for me?

We use advanced software to tailor your system to your needs and preferences. To give you peace of mind, all quotes go through a stringent engineering review by the solar installer. And to ensure the system is right for you, our live chat support will be here to answer all of your questions.

Why should I consider solar?

More power to you. Having solar panels on your roof means you can generate free energy during the day. It’s the fastest way to take control of your energy needs and use it to power your home!

Bigger bang for your buck. By installing solar, you can save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising prices, plus you will also get paid for any surplus power you generate if you decide to switch to a solar friendly energy retailer.

A win for you and a win for the plant. Installing solar is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and doing your bit to increase renewables on the grid. Together, we can make energy greener and affordable for everyone.

What is a solar system?

A solar system consists of solar panels, an inverter and a grid-connect solar meter. When the sun shines, solar panels on the roof absorb sunlight and convert it to direct current (DC) electricity. DC isn’t suited to work with appliances we use at home, so an inverter is used to convert it to alternating current (AC) electricity. Once the inverter has done its job, wiring and a grid-connect solar meter ensure you’re importing and exporting electricity into the grid and your house.

How long does a solar system last?

Solar panels last for 25 to 30 years on average, whereas the average lifespan of an inverter is 10 to 15 years.

Do I qualify for a subsidy?

Yes. All residential solar systems qualify for the Solar Credits program as part of a federal government scheme called the Renewable Energy Target. This program offers a subsidy in the form of a financial rebate, which is commonly referred to as the Small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

The size of your solar system and your location determine the number of STCs you are eligible for. The actual rebate depends on STC price, which is applied as an up-front discount on the purchase of a residential solar system. The STC price is based on market condition and averages around $37 per STC.

The subsidy typically reduces the cost of a solar system by 20% and is applied at the point of sale. The solar installer applies for the STCs so you don’t have to worry about processing any paperwork yourself.

What should I know about batteries?

Batteries help you maximise the value of your solar system. With a battery, you can store any excess solar energy generated during the day for overnight use. When choosing the size of your battery, it’s essential to keep in mind your personal energy needs and usage patterns. Every household has its own way of using energy throughout the day. Some use most of their power during the day, others during the night. Our sophisticated software is designed to help you find the right system for your home.

Who are the solar installers on the platform?

We have hand picked a number of CEC-accredited solar installers with great quality products, good warranties and excellent customer service. The number of installers available on the platform depends on your location and their availability.

What is a Clean Energy Council approved installer?

Being approved by the Clean Energy Council is a way for solar businesses to show their commitment to responsible sales and marketing activities and solar industry best practice. Accreditation with the Clean Energy Council gives installers access to continuous professional development and technical support to ensure solar PV installations of a superior quality.

Who is Powershop?

Powershop is all about giving you control, helping you save, and they care about the environment. The 2018 Green Electricity Guide has been released, and Powershop is still Australia’s #1 greenest power company with a near-perfect score of 9.7 out of 10.

Why does Wala partner with Powershop?

Going solar is a great time to consider switching your energy retailer. You might want to change your energy plan to a solar friendly retailer. We make this easy for you by partnering with Australia’s greenest power company: Powershop.

Powershop supports solar energy and will pay you a high feed-in tariff for any surplus power you send back to the grid.

Does Powershop support solar?

Yes. Powershop currently supports solar in New South Wales, South East Queensland and Victoria.

How and when do customers receive feed-in rebates with Powershop?

The total value of a customer’s export solar generation will appear as a credit in their Powershop account once a month and can be used to purchase power in the online shop. This will be included in the monthly account review and available for use once the review has been issued.

Do solar customers receive different rates and discounts to non-solar customers?

No. Powershop treats all customers equally. Solar customers pay the same rates and receive the same discounts as non-solar customers. Remember, our discounts apply to the whole bill; usage and daily supply charge. To view Powershop’s prices click here.
